There is so much more to skiing vacations in Colorado than simply just the runs, slopes and lifts. As skiers know, ski and snow conditions play a big part in the type of skiing that can be done at any given time and though many people think of powder being the best type of snow, it is not necessary best for each variety of skiing.
There are four main types of skiing available at Colorado ski resorts, including downhill, crosscountry, Nordic and telemark. Each one works best under certain conditions and with different types of snow. Generally snow types also define the type of skiing that can be done and the type of skis that can be used; these snow conditions include: powder (virgin) – best for downhill, Nordic, telemark and crosscountry touring; crud (hardened and used) – best for multicondition downhill, Nordic, telemark and crosscountry skiing; crust (hard outer layer and softer layer underneath) – best for fast downhill or telemark skiing; slush (melting snow) – depending on the depth, usually suitable for all skiing types; and ice (solid snow) – not suited for any type of safe skiing.
